My Second Rivet Gun Kit

So my first experiment trying to rivet something was a bust. The cheap gun I bought at Amazon was not grabbing the rivets, and I decided to take it apart.

Note to self - cheap rivet guns are not adjustable.

Apparently the spring was not seated right, and once I reseated it the gun started grabbing the rivets, but I lost a small part that held the gun together. I was still able to rivet some, but the size rivets that came with the gun were too small.

So I learned something new. The rivets have a "grip" length, which is essentially how long they are, and they come in different sizes.

What size do I need? I have no idea.

So I went to Lowes intending on buying some regular screws to get this over with. An attendant asked me if I needed help, and I said "yes, where do you have your rivets?"

Not sure why I did that.

So I found a new rivet gun
. Still cheap ($20 instead of $12) but it did did not include any rivets. There was a cheap variety pack with three grip lengths - 1/8", 1/4" and 1/2". They were all 1/8" diameter. The diameter didn't bother me as much, as I could make the hole bigger if I need to, but I think 1/8" is fine.

Now I'm a riveting master.

My Very First Rivet Gun Kit

I bought my very own rivet gun kit to make a small repair this weekend.  $12 at Amazon.

Where Is My Airstream?

As part of my Airstream security measures, I've added a really good trailer hitch lock, but I felt that a GPS locator would also be a good addition.  Enter SPOT Trace.

I got this tiny little GPS locator for $50 in a Black Friday deal.  And for an additional $99 per year I get notified via email anytime my Airstream moves.  I can even log onto a website and see where it's at.   Me like.

Moving On Up

The TV in the bedroom was just too low on the wall. I had to move it up.  I was a bit nervous having to drill new holes on my wall.  But I worked up the courage and did it.

A little wood filler and the old holes disappeared. Now he TV is in a much more comfortable viewing angle.

I added a couple of junction boxes to the TV power and cable connections to protect them from the elements.

WiFi Range Extender

We use aVerizon Jetpack for internet connectivity, but sometimes the wifi signal is not strong enough to cover our RV pad.  So we got a Netgear AC1200 range extender.  Problem solved.

Update: I'm returning it.  It didn't work.  I went through the setup several times.  It works on and off.  Nothing I can do to troubleshoot that.  So it's going back.

Missed Opportunity

We missed going to the Airstream this past weekend.  The second weekend we've missed since we got the Airstream.  We just had other plans.  But we are on deck for next weekend.  I've got some extra work to do on the TV install, and we got a Spot Trace GPS tracker that I have to hide somewhere in the Airstream.  Exciting!

Time to Go

It's that time. Time to go.  So sad.  But we'll be back.

Day 9 of 9

Well, this is it.  The last day of our 9 day stay.  I really enjoyed being at the ranch this long.  I can see myself living here.  I like it that much.

Today we will finish the receptacle installation.  I bought a part too small.  We'll have breakfast in town.  IHOP. Yum.  And then we'll do nothing till it's time to leave.  Perfection.

Day 8 of 9

Next to the last day.  We went to the flea market today and ordered a nice wooden sign for our lot. Also did some shopping to clean up the TV install.  Weather resistant receptacles and such.  We also had lunch at Crazy Fish.  Do you know what ONE POUND of fried shrimp looks like?

And this is what a slice of orange cake looks like...

Day 7 of 9

Well, we're on the home stretch.  We've spent most weekends at the ranch, so we're familiar with the routine.  Today we went Black Friday shopping for a TV to put in our deck.  And we spend most of the day dealing with that. Whew.

Day 6 of 9

Happy Thanksgiving!

We waited the whole day for this.  And then we vegged out the rest of the day.  Thanks!

Day 5 of 9

Well, we are over the 50% mark, and today we again did nothing.  We rode the golf cart around a bit, and went into town to buy some stuff at Lowes and had dinner.  Tomorrow is Thanksgiving.  Today is the day before Thsnksgiving.   And I'm sitting here under the awning looking up at the sky and contemplating the meaning of life. Priceless.

Oh, and the paint in the corner bench dried beautifully.

Day 4 of 9

Today we had breakfast at IHOP, and I fixed some wood rot in one of our benches.  I filled it with wood filler and painted.  That's about it.  Thank God I'm not getting paid by the hour.  I'd starve.

Day 3 of 9

Today we took a 90 minute drive to Achiote Restaurant in Orlando.  It was worth it.  Blood sausage, heavy soup, plaintains.  So much food for lunch we skipped dinner.  And that was day 3. Wow. Amazing.

Day 2 of 9

Today was our second day.  Normally we'd be packing to go back home marking the end of the weekend.  Not this week though.  This week we stay!

We went to Home Depot to get some wood filler and paint to fix some wood rot in one of our benches.  I did the BBQ thing again today.  It will go down into the 40's tonight!  Yay!

It's amazing his time flies when you have nothing to do...

Day 1 of 9

Today is day 1 of our 9 day stay. We're excited. It's in the low 70s. I did BBQ for lunch and we ate outside. My wife is putting up the Xmas lights. I'm sitting in a chair doing nothing.  Not a thing.  Priceless.

Time to Clean Up

It's been 5 months since we had the trailer washed.  So the guys from PCS (Professional Coach Services) were nice enough to come clean up our trailer.  Looks nice!

Land and Sea

I did some shopping at Land and Sea Market today.  I got their 7 for $37 deal, which let's me pick seven things from a list.  I got Salmon, Tilapia, Chicken, Filet, and added some veggie skewers and pork ribs.  I am all set for the week!

Extended Stay

We've stayed in our trailer almost every weekend since we got it, but only 2-3 days at a time.  We are getting ready to spend NINE days in our trailer starting tomorrow.  Yay!  This is a small full-timing preview.  So far we like it, we shall see after 9 days.

We're in Fort Desoto!

It's our last trip of the year. We are planning to spend the holidays at River Ranch, and our next trip is Alumaflamingo in February.  Fort Desoto is under 3 hours from River Ranch. It's good to take out the trailer once in a while to practice hitching and towing.

We really like Fort Desoto a lot.  Not as much ax River Ranch, but it's easily our second favorite.

So we went to the Tampa RV show and were disappointed. It's about 1/10th the size of the January show.  They only had one Airstream. At least it was a Basecamp, so we got to see one up close.  Boy that thing is tiny!

We were in and out in less than an hour.  Now we know not to go to that show and wait until the one in January.  That one is huge!

Tampa Bay RV Show

Tomorrow we'll go to the Tampa RV show.  Not to look at RVs. We already have ours.  But we plan to spend some time in the accessories pavilion. Fun!

Dielectric Grease and Cover

I applied a little bit of dielectric grease to the connectors of the umbilical cord to protect them from corrosion, and put on a cover for the plug for when it's not connected to my tow vehicle.  An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

On My Way

With the help of a buddy we cut the pieces and am on my way to the ranch to do my second project.

A Little Snag

Went to Lowes today to get the wood for my next project.  The have 4x6 lumber, but they don't cut it.  Neither does Home Depot.  Which means I have to cut it.  A little more work than I was expecting. Sigh.

Propane Tanks

So it's that time in our ownership experience when we have to deal with our propane tanks.

We have two 30 pound propane tanks in the front of our Airstream.  I vaguely remember the orientation.  Actually, I forgot most of it.

Propane runs the stove top.   It can run the water heater and the fridge, but we have a 50 amp hookup in our campsite so we don't use propane for that.  And it runs the furnace.  Which in Florida is not very useful.  We used the furnace the first night we spent in the Colonial parking lot for like 5 minutes.  Never used it since.

So our propane tanks are probably mostly full, but I've decided it's time to check them. Our Airstream did not come with any propane gauges.  Very odd.  So how are we supposed to know how much gas we have left?

I found this very useful video.

I also found this video while Googling the subject.

So based on this second video, I purchased two Camco gas gauges from Amazon.  $20 a piece. I'll try them out this weekend and report back.

The Next Project

The concrete pad where the Airstream sits is framed in wood. The wood has rotted away due to water and age.  With my newfound confidence in my carpentry skills, this will be my next project.
